Legalism Debunked
Legalism is the attempt to earn God’s approval by keeping rules, instead of recognizing that the law shows us our need for grace. Though the Galatians had suffered for the sake of the gospel, they were being tempted by this false promise. In Galatians 3, Paul calls them back to their own experience, revealing the emptiness of legalism and reminding them of the Spirit’s powerful work among them. Their salvation did not come through their own effort, but through God’s grace. What we could never accomplish on our own, God has fully accomplished through Christ, allowing believers to rest in his finished work.
