Drawing Near to the Lord
Though it sometimes seems foreign or archaic, the book of Leviticus is critical to our understanding of the gospel. Leviticus describes the entire religious system of ancient Israel, and in doing so, foreshadows Christ's atoning work on the cross. Because our sin keeps us from a holy God, access to God was only ever possible through the old covenant system of animal sacrifice. These sacrifices point us toward a new and better covenant, where Jesus himself becomes the sacrifice, thus bridging the gap between heaven and earth, holiness and sin, and man and God.
