Jesus, Only Jesus
Rather than competing with the skilled orators of his day, Paul delivers a simple message to the Corinthian church: Jesus Christ and him crucified. His clear and unadorned words ensured that his listeners focused on the message rather than the messenger. Because all of Scripture points to the story of one person, Jesus, Paul desired to see a church grounded in him alone. Only the message of the gospel can shatter self-dependency, dismantle human pride, and leave us humble. Empty-handed, we cling to Jesus and find our meaning and purpose in him.
