Inconspicuous Apostasy
According to Jesus, the greatest danger posed to the church is religion. His most frequent and forceful rebukes were made against the religious elite. Paul warns the Galatians that adding anything to the gospel, even small distortions, is the same as deserting Christ himself. Apostasy happens quickly when we trade God’s gift of grace for self-reliance. Distorted gospels turn good news for sinners into good advice for the self-righteous. Only the true gospel, which declares “God has done, therefore I respond,” brings freedom, assurance, and adoption as God’s children. Our hope rests not in ourselves, but in Christ alone.
