The Necessity of Sanctification
In the opening verses of Romans 6, Paul declares that those who belong to Christ are no longer slaves to sin. Through Jesus' death on the cross, he secured an eternal victory over sin, and because we are united with him, we share in this victory! While we are not yet free from the presence of sin, God sanctifies us, gradually eradicating sin's power. We can therefore turn from sin, not by mustering up more willpower, but by recognizing who we are in Christ—empowered by the reality that Christ's defeat of sin and death frees us to love him and walk in righteousness.
