Jonah's Heart, God's Heart
The story of Jonah contrasts God’s heart, full of grace and mercy, with Jonah’s heart, proud and uncompassionate. Like Jonah, we can suffer from spiritual amnesia—thinking that we deserve mercy, while others deserve wrath. Scripture reminds us, however, that God's great mercy does not negate his perfect justice. Furthermore, God is free to show mercy to whom he will show mercy. God’s wrath was completely satisfied when it was poured out on Christ. Because of the forgiveness we ourselves have received, we too are free to share the truth of God’s grace and mercy with others.
